Membrane switches
Custom Membrane Switches for OEM Interfaces
Engineering interface systems designed for reliability and responsiveness
Membrane switches present a smooth, low-profile touch-responsive interface that feels modern and intuitive to the end user. At the same time, its construction provides a durable, sealed system that protects the underlying electronics.
The difference between a switch that performs reliably and one that fails comes down to integration. It’s critical for the touch surface, circuitry and graphic overlay to function as a single engineered system.
DuraTech manufactures custom membrane switch and graphic overlay assemblies that help OEM teams resolve design challenges early. The result: dependable controls for years of operation.
What is a membrane switch?
A membrane switch is a user interface technology used in appliances, electronics and industrial equipment. Unlike a mechanical switch, it uses pressure applied to a flexible surface to activate an electrical circuit.
It’s constructed from multiple layers that are assembled over a printed circuit. When pressed, these layers make contact to complete the circuit and register an input.Membrane switch design: What goes wrong and why
A membrane switch operates through a sequence of mechanical and electrical responses triggered by user input. When any element in that sequence underperforms or fails, the interface no longer responds as intended.
These issues most often stem from mismatches between material selection, operating conditions and stack-up design decisions — problems that may not appear during early testing but emerge under real-world use.
Common membrane switch failure modes include:
- Dome collapse or tactile fatigue from repeated use
- Electrical failure caused by moisture ingress
- Misalignment between graphics, contacts and LEDs
- Adhesive flagging or delamination due to premature bond failure
- Environmental degradation from temperature, chemicals or repeated cleaning
Membrane switches built to withstand the environment
A membrane switch is where product functionality begins, so it must perform reliably in a high touch environment and be designed for a long lifespan.

Common application environments include:
- Medical equipment that requires frequent sanitizing procedures
- Appliances that demand a modern aesthetic and frequent cleaning and wipe-downs
- Industrial controls exposed to vibration, oils and mechanical wear
- Outdoor equipment subject to UV exposure, moisture and temperature swings
- Transportation and mobility devices exposed to movement, vibration and weather
- High-use commercial interfaces that call for long term durability
- Real-world operator interaction applying repeated or excessive input
- Exercise equipment that is subject to frequent cleaning, vibration
